So what’s the big idea?

If you’ve ever been asked to produce Web content for five bucks an article, you’ll know there’s a problem in online publishing. Website owners need content to inform users, generate ads, promote affiliate products and improve search engine rankings. Few though have the budgets to pay professional writers to create them. The result is plenty of poor quality content and lots of offended writers.
Scribat aims to square this circle by applying to professional writing a model long used in photography. Instead of purchasing exclusive rights to an article, publishers will be able to purchase a one-time usage license. Website owners will get the content they need, and writers will be free to continue selling rights to the same articles time and time again.

What are Exclusivity Licenses?

We recognize that not all publishers are willing to buy content that may be used elsewhere. In addition to purchasing usage licenses then, publishers will also be able to buy an exclusive right to use an article. Prices start at $39.95 for articles that have yet to be licensed and fall as usage licenses are sold. Once an Exclusive License has been sold, the article is removed from sale and may be not be sold again.

What are the profiles for?

We want to make it easy for publishers to buy articles off-the-shelf. But we also want to allow website owners to commission unique content. Writers will be able to add their details to the site, indicating the types of content they produce and their level of availability. We’ll then work with publishers to help them commission the content they need from writers like you.

What can I do to receive commissioned work?

Be available and sell lots of articles! The more articles you upload and sell, the more you prove the commercial value of your writing. Show us that you can please publishers and that you’re reliable, and when publishers approach us with commissions and regular jobs, you’ll be top of our list of preferred contributors.

What kind of articles do you need?

At the moment, we’re looking for articles of at least 350 words on every topic imaginable.

Are articles checked for quality?

Yes, and we’re going to be pretty strict about this. Content will be reviewed before being added to the site and articles that don’t meet our standards will not be accepted.

How do you protect my content from unauthorized publication?

We can’t stop piracy entirely but we can make stealing hard by holding back the end of each article. Publishers will be shown enough to understand what the article is about and how it has been written but the complete article will only be released after purchase.

Does content have to be exclusive to Scribat?

Yes. Because each article can also be sold under an Exclusivity License we have to be as sure as we can be that the article has not been sold elsewhere.

Will articles carry my name?

We encourage publishers to include the writer’s name but we understand that many publishers prefer their sites to speak with one voice, so we won’t insist on it. You might not get credit, but you will get cash.

What can I do to increase sales?

Understand that publishers need articles that serve a purpose. Content has to inform and entertain readers by providing solid information that’s well-written. But often it also has to generate targeted ads and improve search engine rankings.
That means that articles that mention products by name, offer consumer advice and are rich in keywords without harming the flow of the article are most likely to find buyers.
It also means that you can adapt the same article for different keywords. An article that explained how to photograph lightning, for example, could be rewritten for different camera models with minimal changes. Buyers targeting different keywords could then find the content they need while writers could sell licenses to the same article in multiple ways for little extra effort.
You should also be sure to keyword your articles fully so that they’re easy to find.

How will I be paid?

By Paypal. We may issue checks in the future but for the moment Paypal is the easiest way to pay royalties.

Can I join if I don’t have articles to upload?

Yes. Anyone can complete a profile to make themselves available for commissioned work.

When will you be opening to publishers?

Now! We’re still building up the content bank, but we are now open to buyers.
